There are a lot of things that are still unknown about sleeping. We know that there are certain changes going on in the brain, but why and how they happen is still the subject of speculation. Especially mysterious are dreams.

Dreams have long been thought of as the means to process information gathered through the day, and more and more research confirms these speculations.

“At night the brain literally swallows, digests and releases itself from information, just like the bowels do it”, explains clinical psychologist Rubin Naiman, specialized in integrative sleep and dreaming in the University of Arizona.

“The things the brain saves become a part of what we are”.

But, there are still a lot of things that are not known about dreams. We present the little known facts that science has concluded until now.

We all dream through the whole night

You have probably heard someone say that dreams happen only during the REM phase of sleeping. But, we actually dream through the whole night, says Naiman. We are more focused on dreams during the REM phase, but the fact that you don’t see a dream doesn’t mean it is not there.

As the night progresses, REM sleep periods get longer, so most dreams happen during the last third of the sleep.

Insects and fish don’t have a REM phase

Although sometimes dreams do happen outside the REM phase, identifying “fast eye movements” which is a characteristic of that phase, is very difficult in other species. But, it is well known that all mammals and reptiles, as well as some birds do really have REM phase, so it means they probably dream too.

You have a lower chance of remembering your dream if you have been woken by an alarm

The trauma you experience when you are woken by an alarm can cause the forgetting of a dream that was in your thoughts just a minute before.

The best way to remember a dream is to allow yourself to slowly wake up. Just don’t try to hard because chasing a dream will make it go away faster, says Naiman.

People that remember dreams have different brain activity

A study from 2014. shows that there is more spontaneous activity in certain areas of the brain, in people that remember their dreams more often, than in those who do not.

The differences didn’t exist just during sleep, but also in a wake condition.

Earlier research shows that people who remember their dreams react more vigorously to sound during sleep and when awake than those who do not.

Your body reacts to dreams the same way it does to reality

It is a bit strange when you wake up and you are mad at somebody because he did something in your dream. But biologically, it makes sense because your feelings stay with you when you open your eyes, says Naiman.

For example, your blood pressure can rise, or your heart rate, just like in a stressful scenario in reality or like a participating in sport and physical activity.

We dream in real time

Opposite to the myth that dreams last just a few parts of a second, in reality dreams last 20 to 60 minutes, says Naiman. The dreams you dream at the beginning of the night are shorter, and the ones later are longer.

Nightmares are not always linked to fears

Nightmares are terrifying, but fear is not the only thing driving them. A study done during the start of this year, that included 331 people, discovered that bad dreams can be caused by worry, confusion and guilt. The research also shows that men have nightmares linked to aggression and violence, while women focus on conflicts with other people.

Your dreams are not strange unless you see them like that

“When you dream, no matter how weird it is, you probably don’t have that feeling. When you wake up, you realize the dream was weird”, says Naiman.

Comparing a weird dream is like comparing different eating habits of two completely different cultures, according to Naiman.

You can die in your sleep, and still live

Many believe in the popular myth that if you die in your sleep you die in reality, but Naiman accents that it doesn’t have anything to do with reality. Actually, he encourages people to explore.

“If you ever have a lucid dream about dying, go with the flow”.

Some that have experienced it didn’t really like it because you get to live after you die, but it is interesting still.

Productivity is the goal of pretty much everyone these days. With how busy life can be, fitting more into those waking hours is a necessity as much as a terrible hassle. But when you are feeling overwhelmed and burnt out, the last thing you want to do is more stuff, no matter what those things might be.

The real trick is learning the best ways to make the most of the time you have. That means being better organized, more focused and prepared.

With this in mind, we have put together a quick checklist containing major tools and tips that will help you get productive today!

Download it here!

Tips you’ll learn from the eBook:

1. Wake Up A Little Earlier

I was reluctant to try this one myself. I was already tired in the morning, why would I want to get even less sleep? But it prompted a few changes, the biggest being that I went to bed a little bit earlier in order to wake up on time without losing those added zzz’s. I started out just a half an hour, and I am not getting up an hour and a half earlier. What good does this do? It allows me to get more done first thing in the AM when my energy is high, including exercising, making a healthy packed lunch for myself and family, checking all those internet things that might have distracted me at work, and even a bit of cleaning so I don’t have to do it when I get in from a long day running around. Another thing I found helpful was Sleeptyi.me. This incredibly helpful tool works by letting you put in what time you are going to bed or what time you have to wake up, then giving you the perfect time to set your alarm or go to bed. Your sleep will be better and you will feel more refreshed when you wake up.

2. Make A List

One of the best things you can do is make lists. They are an easy way to keep you organized, and to avoid losing track of your time and schedule. Having more than one is always a good idea. Start by making one for the day itself with all of the items listed as most to least important. Then, set one up for the week, and one for a further time period like a month or even year. You can then keep track of long term goals along with the short ones for the day.

To make it even more convenient, you can download one of many to-do list applications that will sync up devices so you can see your list at work, at home and on the go. Or just use a simple piece of paper and a pen, if you want. Just don’t use a pencil..it is much more effective to use a pen, and so have to cross it off rather than delete it entirely.

3. Automate As Much As Possible

Why spend time on something that you can have done for you? Things like paying bills, sending emails and other small but frequent tasks can be automated thanks to the web so you don’t have to do it yourself. Even social media statuses can be planned ahead these days, letting you use things like Facebook pages or just general accounts without having to dedicate your attention to it at busier moments.

4. Cut Down Your Online Activity

How much time have you spent on Facebook today? Or watching YouTube videos? Admit it, the minutes are at least in the double digits. The internet has many productive capabilities, but it also seems to be constructed to make you procrastinate. There is so much to do and see, and a single Cracked article can turn into a dozen before you know it. Cutting down on how much time you spend on the web can have a huge impact on your time,, and on the quality of the free time that you do have. Try using a program like LeechBlock or StayFocusd that will let you set limits on how much time you spend on certain types, or the internet in general.

5. Create Time Blocks For Work

Sometimes it just isn’t possible to remain focused as much as you should. An easy way to improve how much you get done is to set blocks of time that you work at a time. So you might dedicate a full hour or as little as twenty minutes to a project. Set a timer and don’t stop until that time is over. Then get up, do something else, and come back for another block of time.

Do you have any tips for being more productive? Let us know in the comments.

A powernap refers to a nap that rejuvenates you, but doesn’t take up a lot of your time. Essentially, a powernap is supposed to give you the perfect little boost that you need, however many people get the art of the powernap completely wrong.

We sought out 6 tips for taking the perfect powernap.

1. Avoid disruptions

You get the best quality of sleep when there are no interruptions or distractions. Switch off your mobile phone and any other things that might distract you or wake you during your powernap. Also try to take your nap at a time when it is unlikely that people might disturb you.

2. Timing is everything

Medical experts advise that the best time of day for a powernap is between 2 and 4pm. The perfect length for a powernap is approximately 30 minutes since it is enough time to switch off and rejuvenate, without making you too drowsy when you wake up. It’s in your best interest to avoid napping soon before you head to bed or snoozing for too long in the afternoon since it might disrupt your sleeping pattern.

3. Set the mood

To get the perfect power nap, you should think about the environment where you are sleeping. Try to make the room dark and cool if possible and avoid using blankets. Also let in fresh air or have an air conditioner going to keep the air in the room moving. Don’t stress too much about eliminating all noise—in fact your sleep might be better with some background noise. You could play some soft background music or play some white noise to help you to fall asleep quicker.

4. Don’t force sleep

If you are struggling to fall asleep, don’t fret about it too much. Forcing yourself to sleep can be very counter-productive. As a general rule, if you struggle to sleep you should avoid sleep completely yet still do something that relaxes you such as lying on your bed reading or listening to some calming music. You might find that even though you didn’t actually sleep, you are rejuvenated because you were able switch off and relax for a while.

5. Wake up properly

Set an alarm even when you are just having a powernap. An alarm will ensure that you do not sleep longer than you intended. However, the sound of an alarm can be very disruptive so choose an alarm with a soft and pleasing melody to wake you up in the best possible mood. Other things to help you get back to your day after a powernap is to splash some water on your face or take a quick shower if you have the time. A healthy snack might likewise help you to wake up.

6. Avoid things that keep you awake

Before you take a powernap you should try to avoid things that will keep you awake and prevent you from enjoying a nap. Don’t drink anything with a lot of caffeine in it like tea, coffee or energy drinks before you intend to take a nap. Also, where possible, avoid looking at screens like your on mobile phone, tablets, computers or even a television set. The backlight from these screens allegedly stimulates brain activity and can prevent you from switching off to nap.

Stephen Parker is a banker from Sydney and travels a lot for work. He is constantly dealing with jetlag and recently purchased a new mattress from Sleepmaker, which he hopes will improve his quality of sleep.

Did you know that one in five workers admits to sitting at their desk all day, not even getting up to take a break or go for lunch? That’s just one of the eye-opening statistics listed in this infographic from Louch Shacklock, which examines how poor working conditions can contribute to worker illness and poor productivity.

Why Are You Tied to Your Desk?

Many office workers suffer from poor circulation, back problems and other health issues because of the amount of time that they spend at their desks. It’s understandable (if still not a good idea) to occasionally spend all day, every day, at your desk if a deadline is approaching and there’s a lot of work to be done, but interestingly enough only one quarter of the workers cited “Not enough time” as their reason for being desk-bound. Other reasons included poor weather, a lack of fitness, and simply feeling “too tired”.

If you’re feeling tired and drained at work, take a look at this infographic and try to put some of the tips into action. You may be amazed at how much better you feel with some small changes to your working environment.

Growing up is something most of us look forward to as kids. We dress up in grown-up clothes or pretend we have grown-up responsibilities. Now that you have finally reached the elusive stage of life we call adulthood, it is possible some of the luster has worn off. Here are 10 things you should do to make being an adult successful and, dare I say, fun.

1. Figure Yourself out

One of the perks of being a grown up is that the opinions of others matter much less. Do you watch embarrassingly bad movies or play computer games about aliens? Embrace it. Like what you like, figure out what matters most to you, and then, carry on. Being an adult is the time to finally enjoy being yourself.

2. Communicate Coherently

We can’t all be masters of the written word like Dickens and Tolstoy, but being able to communicate clearly with others is an essential skill for an adult. Use complete sentences when you send emails, call instead of text when you really need to have a conversation, and please, please, please learn the difference between there, their, and they’re.

3. Take Care of Your Skin

Nothing will make you look older than you are faster than damaged skin. Your skin gets more fragile as you get older. Start taking care of it now, not only to stay looking nice, but to prevent skin cancer. Simple things like using moisturizer with sunscreen go a long way toward protecting your skin.

4. Take Care of Your Teeth

Even if you have a grown-up job in New York or Burlington, orthodontist visits can be expensive. Prevent expensive and painful problems by doing the basics. Brush and floss regularly like your parents told you to when you were little. This is at least one time they knew what they were talking about.

5. Learn to Dress Yourself

You may think this is something you already figured out when you were three or four years old, but since it is something you do every day, make sure you have mastered it. Learn to invest in clothes that will serve you for more than a season. Buy clothes that fit well and are comfortable as well as sturdy so you can rely on your staples for years to come. Fashion changes regularly, but some classics like a great pair of jeans or a tailored suit or little black dress will never go out of style.

6. Learn to Cook

You don’t have to be a gourmet chef, but learning to cook will pay big dividends. Cooking your own food doesn’t just save you money; eating home cooked meals is almost always healthier than getting takeout again. Try new recipes every once in a while. You can impress your friends with your skills, and you may even have some fun.

7. Read

Reading keeps your mind active and helps you stay well informed. It also gives you something interesting to talk to other people about. If you are intimidated, start with something smaller and lighthearted like a book written by your favorite comedian. If you are looking for a challenge, revisit some of the old classics. They are classics for a reason, and reading them gives you common ground with countless other people out in the world.

8. Stay Fit

Staying fit may have been effortless when you were a teenager, but if you keep wolfing those burritos into adulthood, you may start to see some negative effects. Now is the time to be active, eat right, and have fun so you will be healthy for years to come. Fitness doesn’t get easier with age, so work it in to your lifestyle now.

9. Be Aware of the World Around You

One thing that distinguishes children from adults is their awareness level. When you are a kid, the world is small, and it likely revolves around you. As an adult, you begin to see the bigger picture. Be aware of what is going on in the world, and pay attention to the people around you. Be polite and kind to others; the world is still actually pretty small, and you never know when you will need someone you can count on.

10. Have Fun

Being an adult doesn’t mean you have to stop having fun. It actually means you can have more fun than ever before. You can afford things you never could have dreamed of as a kid, and although you may have fewer friends, the ones who stuck around know you better and care more about you. Being an adult also means you have opportunities to travel to new places and try new things. Enjoy it.

Take advantage of the freedom that comes with being an adult, you have more responsibilities, but you also have more resources. Start doing these 10 things to make the most of your adulthood.

Anger is a normal and usually healthy human emotion. We have all felt angry at one point in our lives; it is characterized as either a momentary annoyance or full-fledged rage. Unfortunately, anger can be a huge problem if it gets out of control and becomes destructive. Uncontrolled anger can result in relationship problems and can affect the overall quality of a person’s life.

If you have a problem with managing your anger, you need to take necessary steps to rein it in. Do not let your negative emotions take control of your life. This article lists a few anger management tips, but before that, you should first understand what uncontrolled anger can do to your life.

The Importance Of Controlling Your Anger

Some people think that releasing your pent up anger is healthier than keeping it all in. There are also some individuals who believe that their anger is justified. However, you need to understand that anger is more likely going to damage your professional and personal relationships, impair your judgment, take away your opportunities, and have a negative impact on how people perceive you. Here’s how uncontrolled anger can hurt you and those around you:

Physical Health: When your stress and tension level is always on high, it can have a negative impact on your health. Chronic anger will make you more vulnerable to heart problems, high cholesterol levels and blood pressure, weakened immune system, and diabetes.

Mental Health: If you are constantly angry, you won’t be able to concentrate or focus on the things you should be doing. You won’t be able to enjoy life because negative thoughts and emotions cloud your thinking. Keep in mind that uncontrolled anger can also result in stress, anxiety, depression, and other mental distress.

Opportunities Lost: Lashing out on your colleagues, supervisors, or clients won’t help your career. In fact, if you are unable to rein your anger in, you might end up assaulting someone which might result in misdemeanor charges. Although misdemeanor crimes are usually considered as less serious, a conviction can negatively impact your life, says the defense attorney at Tad Nelson & Associates. For one, you will have a hard time finding employment. A bad reputation can haunt you for years, making it harder to grab opportunities.

Hurts Your Relationship With Others: Chronic anger can cause long-lasting scars in the people you love. It can also ruin family relationships as well as friendships. Those you love will find it hard to trust you, feel comfortable around you, or speak honestly when they are with you. Keep in mind that uncontrolled and explosive anger is most damaging to children.

Tips For Dealing With Anger

Focus On Your Anger Signs: Although you might think that this is counterintuitive, focusing on your anger signs usually lessens the intensity of this emotion. Once you notice these signs, you should take a minute and walk away for a while before you completely lose control.

Knots in your stomach

Faster heartbeat

Tension in your shoulders

Clenching your fists

Have trouble concentrating

Feeling flushed

Count To Ten: Doing so will help you cool down so that you will be able to overcome your natural impulse to lash out. Once you feel like your anger seems to be getting out of control, you should stop and count to ten. You could also take a brisk walk or listen to music while counting. These activities should help you calm down while releasing your pent up negative emotion.

Exercise: One of the best ways to manage anger in the long term is through exercise or meditation. Doing so will help lower your stress levels. For instance, you can run, walk, swim, or do yoga and meditation for a few minutes every day. This will lower your stress and help you manage your pent up anger. Making exercise a part of your everyday life will help you get rid of anger.

Get Help: Seeking help from a professional can help you explore the reasons behind your chronic anger. This will help you address the root cause of the problem. Therapy provides you with a safe environment to know more about the reasons for your anger and identify the triggers.

A lot of us are stuck in a bit of a rut and there’s one point in everyone’s life where they wake up and question what they’re doing and what the point of it all is.

Life is complex and it’s not easy to have an obvious path and a clear goal in front of us at all times. Things change and there are times when we’re struck with misfortune and issues. However, the most important thing we can be offered is perspective and introspection that allows us to see what’s really happening and whether things are as they seem. So, let’s take a look at some ways to get this perspective and evaluate where our lives are going.

Travel

One of the best ways to get perspective on life is to get away from your every day run of the mill life. Getting away on a retreat or traveling somewhere you’ve never been before can really help you create the mental space to remove yourself from a rut and gain a new perspective. This allows you some space to enjoy yourself and also gain perspective.

Care for yourself

There are some things in life that allow you to improve your attitude and be truly careful of yourself. These experiences allow you to be happier within yourself and have more self love and understanding of yourself. A little trip to a nice quiet beach, or an aromatherapy massage can provide this calm and five you some healthy perspective and understanding that can really help.

Lucid Dreaming

Learning how to lucid dream can be a great way to provide introspection and give your mind more understanding. By being able to free ourselves in our dreams and control what goes on we can gain insight and explore. This can often mean we find out what we truly want and need in our lives and can be something that’s very beneficial in perspective terms.

Friendship

Good friendship is one of the most important and healthiest things in the world and is something of notable benefit. It can help you through the tough times and allows you to celebrate the good ones. A good friend will be a pure hearted person who will encourage and help you through life and offer you an honest opinion on what’s best for you. They’re there for your good and there to help you further yourself – this often comes in the form of offering perspective.

Nature

Nature and getting away from it all can be a fantastic healer and something that provides you with the slower rhythm and scope to gain understanding and perspective. It allows you to be at one with things and by observing it you can improve your mood and gain insight into your feelings and emotions and how you truly feel – this is obviously of notable benefit.

These five different aspects can lend a lot of help and provide you with the ability to improve your life and gain perspective on how things truly are.

If you’ve been feeling a bit down lately, you might just need a incorporate a relaxing walk into your daily routine to improve your mood. Not only is walking a healthy, free and convenient way for getting around, it’s also been show to positively impact mental health.

The last thing you want after a stressful day at work is being stuck in traffic, getting even more stressed out. Walking can provide a great alternative means of transportation if you live near your work. If you can’t get to work walking, try to fit in a walk sometime during your day. You could go for a walk during your lunch break, before you head off to work, or just after you get home. Let’s look at why taking a walk is so great for your mental health.

Walking Relieves Stress

After a difficult day, going for a walk can help give your mind some rest. Getting away from the busyness of daily life is often necessary to be able to clear your mind and get rid of bad thoughts. It can also give you some time to think about your problems clearly and come up with good solutions.

Walking Improves Your Thinking

Research has indicated that walking may improve your brain‘s functioning. A study done on people over 60 found that the subjects’ thinking capacity significantly improved after a slow 45-minute walk.

Walking May Prevent Depression

Walking doesn’t only relieve the stress you are currently experiencing, but may also have a long term beneficial effect on your mental health. Studies show that walking strengthens the brain’s nerve cells and stimulates the growth of connections between nerve cells, especially in parts of the brain that antidepressant medications target.

Walking May Prevent Dementia

A recent study indicates that a daily walk may significantly decrease the risk of getting dementia. Dementia is a very common brain disease among the elder for which there is no real cure. A daily walk can help keep your mind sharp and prevent mental decline later in life.

Walking Improves Your Overall Health

A daily walk can have numerous positive health effects such as helping you lose weight (if necessary), improve your hearth health and reduce your risk of diabetes. Since many physical diseases have been linked with the development of mental health problems, if you keep your body healthy, you’ll be less likely to suffer from depression and other mental health diseases.

When you go for a walk, try to walk in a natural setting if possible. Research shows that taking a walk somewhere surrounded by nature has a much better effect on your mood than walking around in a busy city center. Even in big cities it shouldn’t be too hard to find a park where you can take a peaceful walk while surrounded by trees and plants. Make sure to always be careful as a pedestrian, especially if you are walking along busy streets. Pedestrian accidents happen often and can have severe consequences.

Zane Schwarzlose is a writer at Colley and Colley, LLP, a personal injury law firm in Austin, Texas. Zane tries to walk often.

Just because it is comfortable, does not make it the ideal choice for a working chair. Fundamentally, it might be sound in its judgment of providing the benefit of immediate comfort. However, over the long haul of working countless hours, for countless days, of countless weeks and months, you might come to see the benefit of a chair that’s less comfortable.

Some of the benefits of a “less comfortable chair.”:

Motivating your desire to work

You actually want to work, don’t you? It’s easy to desire to make your office space as homey as possible. Especially since you live a 1/3 of your days hours in it. It’s basically home away from home. That’s why everyone tries to make it that way. If you consider a 24 hour blocked day and room the suggested 8 hours for sleeping, than you have 16 hours of wake time. Now let’s divide that by an 8 hour workday and for many, the travel time and any given person will likely be spending most of their waking life in an office vs. a home. That being said, it’s logical to want to bring your home to work. As it stands, most people bring their work home. That’s another topic altogether.

If you were however, to bring a homey feeling to your work, it would obviously deter your ability to actually work efficiently. Too much comfort endures laziness, not productivity. It is necessary to get a chair that is comfortable enough to sit in for such long hours. At the same time, it should be a little less comfortable, enough that it causes you to willfully project your body in the posture and attitude of workability and assertiveness.

Motivating your desire for physical activity

Sometimes a less comfortable chair will force your legs to cramp or buttocks to numb. Listen to your body. These are great indicators that you need to get up and stretch. Sometimes in a comfortable chair, you may be inclined to never get up and get the blood flowing. It’s healthy at all times, whether in a comfortable chair or not, and especially when sitting for long hours, to get up and stretch or walk.

A not so comfortable seating arrangement may allow you to manage your time better. Such consideration, will not be only healthy for your body but also your mind. For instance, 15 minute break intervals, every 2 hours, could be a great way to get the blood flowing as you walk and take your mind off your project. This would allow you to come back refreshed and maintain the same zeal, determination and focus energy as you did when you first started working.

Imagine if you will a person who never gets up from their chair as they work away. By the 5th hour, the body just goes lethargic. That is just a daunting way for your body to say “I’m out of energy.”

Bonus:

Some good ideas for those 15 minute intervals, may be to meditate, stretch, pray, read a book, walk or jog in place. All of these things can be effective in releasing stress, tension and bad energy that comes from working so intensely and keeping your body in one form for too long.

Something you may want to look into as a rule of thumb for understanding work/break intervals is the proven and popular “time management” method developed by Francesco Cirillo in the late 1980s. It is heavily used by many today. For some, it’s even an alternative to the popular GTD system.

In Conclusion:

When looking for a good chair to work in for several hours at a time. Keep within perspective the ideals of both comfort and discomfort. The Ying and the Yang of a work chair if you will. To be truly effective and have longevity of sound mind, great work ethic and strong physical health and drive, it is essential that your work chair be comfortable enough to sit in for long hours. However, not so much so that it becomes a means for relaxation. Work is not for pleasure, if it was so, everyone would be rich and gladly work all 16 hours of the waking part of their day to achieve that wealth.
